Sermon Snap Shot September 11, 2016

Year’s ago I remember my daughter Grace’s swing coach giving her these instructions:
“It usually only takes a few buckets of balls before you can incorporate a swing change. But it will take as many as 10,000 reps before the swing change will hold up under pressure.”
Like in golf and other sports, we can’t expect to react or respond in a certain way during stressful times unless we’ve practiced something over and over again during non-stressful times. For example, I can’t expect to…
act calmly or cooly when a huge blowup happens with my wife…
or to forgive when I’ve experienced an egregious offense or betrayal…
or to respond reasonably or gently when my daughter wrecks her car…
if I’m not in the habit of practicing this behavior…this response…day in, day out. To reach the point where responding gracefully becomes second nature, almost instinctive, takes hours and hours of practice.
From yesterday’s sermon, “Reflections from Rio 2016: Practice…Practice…Practice”
