Sermon Snap Shot May 7, 2017

So as I re-read this famous story once again this past week I had this thought. Not only is God the Great Physician, but God is also the Great Graphic Designer…the one who on Easter Sunday displayed the power to completely “photoshop” Jesus. God makes Jesus look 10 years younger by wiping aways all those marks, all those blemishes…except for three: the two holes in Jesus’ hands and the one in his side.

Why didn’t God, the Great Graphic Designer of us all, not finish “photoshopping” Jesus? Or, as I’ve learned to say, why didn’t God make the Resurrected Jesus more instagrammable?

The short answer is that if God had “photoshopped” away all of Jesus’ marks, Thomas would have never believed. He would have never uttered those famous words, “My Lord and My God!” I guess God understood this.

But I also believe that God chose to leave these three marks for another reason: so that Thomas, the other disciples and all who would follow might recognize the power and presence of God in those marks…and believe.

And the same could be said for each of us. Like Jesus, we should not try to hide our blemishes or marks. We should wear them proudly because they enable others to recognize the power and presence of God in our own lives…and believe.

It’s as if the Resurrected Jesus says, “Want to know who I am and how the power and presence of God has been at work in my life? Here, let me show you the marks on my body.” Likewise, we should say the same, “Want to know who I am and how the power and presence of God has been at work in my life? Here, let me show you the marks on my body…let me show you the hole in my heart…let me share with you the memory that I just can’t shake.”

From Sunday, May 7, 2017 message based on John 20:19-31, “Photoshop Jesus?”
