Sermon Snap Shot May 20, 2018

The title of today’s message is “‘ALL’ means ALL.” The beauty of Jesus’ message, the beauty of the Gospel, is actually quite simple: any and all – everyone – who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Nobody will be excluded. God’s loving embrace is far wider, far more generous than we could ever imagine.
And to say “Yes” to this loving embrace means that we, with God’s help, will seek to extend this loving embrace to any and all people for the remainder of our lives. It would be foolish and hypocritical to keep it to ourselves. No, we are meant to share it with everyone and trust God with the rest. ALL means ALL.
But let’s be honest. History is filled with religious folk – including many who have claimed to be Christians – who did just the opposite. People who, arbitrarily based on their own biases or hangups, said in essence, “You’re in…you’re out.” Kind of a like the guy working the door at the swanky Hollywood club. “You’re in…you’re out.”
Rather than seeing the humanity and dignity within each person – the “spark of divinity” as my Quaker friends would say – we de-humanize others…
because of their skin color,
because of the way they talk,
because of their poverty or lack of resources,
because of their religious beliefs, or
because of who they choose to love.
And of course, this dehumanization of others can lead to horrible consequences for the excluded…while the excluders can lose their soul in the process as well.
From Pentecost Sunday, May 20 message based on Acts 2:1-21, “‘ALL Means ALL”
