Sermon Snap Shot June 9, 2019

Wow, what a story. The Pentecost story in Acts 2 always gives me goosebumps when I read it closely and really contemplate what that day must have been like.

But, I’ll be honest with you, this story makes me a little nervous. Growing up on the coast – having to deal with threats of tropical storms and hurricanes for most of my life – I don’t like violent winds. They tend to take my nice, neat orderly life and turn it upside down! And I like order. I don’t like chaos.

And spiritually, I feel the same way. I don’t like how the Holy Spirit can be like the rush of a violent wind. Why? Because it tends to take my nice, neat orderly life and turn it upside down! And before you know it…

I’m being called to love people that I don’t naturally love…
I’m being called to move somewhere that I never thought I’d want to live…and
I’m being called to tasks that are really outside my comfort zone.

I like order. And I like being in my comfortable, controlled space.

And yet, the same Spirit of God that once blew…and churned…and empowered those formless, dark waters eons ago to bring forth life…

The same Spirit of God that once blew…and churned…and empowered those humble Galileans 2,000 years ago to bring forth the Church…

is the same Spirit of God that continues to blow today. It is not like a gentle zephyr of a wind but like the rush of a violent wind as it convicts us, pushes us and empowers us to say, “Ok God, I’m yours. We are yours. Help us be your faithful servants. Help us be your faithful Church.”

From Sunday, June 9 message based on Acts 2:1-21, “The Rush of a Violent Wind”
