06 Jun Sermon Snap Shot June 2, 2019
When we remember the story of Ascension Sunday and recall the heroic witnesses that these very ordinary women and men became over the next few decades, it’s tempting to say, “But yeah, it was easy for them. They were firsthand witnesses to the ministry of Jesus. They were there when he fed the multitudes. They were they there when he healed people and cast out demons. They listened to his powerful teaching and preaching. If I had been able to have their firsthand experience, I’d be a strong witness too!”
And yet, haven’t we all seen the power of God at work? In our lives? In the lives of others? Throughout our broken world?
I’ve seen it in my own life over and over again. I’ve prayed this prayer more than a hundred times over the years: “God, I just don’t see how this is going to come together, but I’m going to trust that it’s in your hands.” And you know what? Things always come together. Maybe not as I thought, but in the end it all worked out. The mysterious and awesome power of God at work.
I’ve seen it in your lives…
– those of you who have dreamed of having a loving spouse, your own family, your own home, a decent job…and now you do. The mysterious and awesome power of God at work.
– those of you who have overcome or battled illness with such grace: Nick Abrams, Victoria Thompson, Doug and Linda Thompson, Chris Clark, Gwen Kell. The mysterious and awesome power of God at work.
– those of you who have given so much of yourselves to this community: our educators, our healthcare professionals, our firefighters and law enforcement officials, our small business owners, our military. The mysterious and awesome power of God at work.
And I’ve seen it in this church that we all love. For those of you who can remember, think back to the spring of 2013, shortly before I arrived. There was so much uncertainty about what the future might hold. And look where we are today! The mysterious and awesome power of God at work.
Friends, if we open our eyes…if we open our hearts…if we open our minds, we will see the resurrection power of God at work all around us. Locally and globally.
