19 Jun Sermon Snap Shot June 16, 2016
The first building block or core belief that greatly shaped MLK’s notion of the Beloved Community is found in the last few verses of Genesis 1 and is echoed throughout the Scriptures in places like Psalm 8. Human beings are different from the rest of God’s creation. How? Because they are made in God’s image, God’s likeness. Both males and females are made in God’s image, God’s likeness.
Want to know what God looks like? Then look around you. Flip through a National Geographic. Look in the mirror. God looks like you. God looks like me. We all bear God’s image, God’s likeness. We all look like God.
Now for those of us with big egos, we’re like, “Duh! Of course God looks like me!” But for every one of us with an inflated sense of self, there’s 6-8 others who struggle with the reverse. “Surely God can’t look like me…after what I’ve done…after the life I’ve lived…after all the damage I’ve caused.”
And yet, if there is nothing else you hear me say today, hear me say this: It’s true! You too bear God’s image. You too bear God’s likeness. You too are a beloved child of God!
