Sermon Snap Shot June 10, 2018

I believe that if Jesus were to return to today for a brief period and looked at the state of the Church and world, he would also give us this imperative: “Go and Advocate.”
When I say advocate, what do I mean? To advocate is to plead on behalf of someone else – someone who has little voice, status or resources. In the Bible, the Holy Spirit is referred to as our Advocate as it intercedes for us, leads us, empowers us and so on. The Holy Spirit is like a counselor, an attorney who represents us, who pleads our case for us. Just as the Holy Spirit advocates on our behalf, we are to advocate on the behalf of others.
God’s call to advocate is littered throughout the Scriptures – nearly from the very beginning to the very end. Simply put, the various writers in the Bible make the case over and over again that we can’t call ourselves the people of God – we can’t convince ourselves that we are doing God’s work in the world – if we are not advocating for those who are suffering…
because of the family into which they were born…
because of the region of the world that they call home…
because of wars or economic policies over which they have no control…
because of famine or lack of access to clean water and medicine…
because of the color or their skin, their religious practices and customs…and so on.
From Sunday, June 10, message “Go and Advocate”
