Now you’re like me, this is where you hope that the Gospel ended. God is good. God is with us. God will provide.
Unfortunately, this is only half the story, only half the Gospel. For there is another piece to what Jesus does here in Matthew 10…to what he does later in Matthew 28…to what God does throughout the Biblical narrative. And it is a daunting task – indeed it can be overwhelming when we contemplate it? And what is it? Jesus calls on the 12 to reach out – in God’s name, with God’s power and under God’s authority – and do the same exact kind of ministry that Jesus was doing.
Like Jesus, they were to kick out evil spirits.
Like Jesus, they were to tenderly care for the bruised and hurt.
Like Jesus, they were to go to the lost, confused people right in their neighborhood.
Like Jesus, they were to bring health to the sick.
Like Jesus, they were to raise the dead.
Like Jesus, they were to touch the untouchables.
Like Jesus, they were to tell everyone, through their words and actions, that the kingdom was here.
This was the mission assigned to the 12…and it remains the same mission assigned to any and all churches in our day and time as well.
From yesterday’s message from Matthew 10:1-10, “I Have a DREAM: Mission…Possible?”
