Sermon Snap Shot January 12, 2020

And this brings us to the third petition: that we might have power.
It is worth noting that the Greek word translated as “power” is dunamis. As you might guess, it’s where we get the words dynamic, dynamo and dynamite in the English. As the writer of Ephesians believed, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead – the same power that sits above every earthly power and authority in this life and in the life to come – is the same power that is also within all who believe. And that means me and you…and that means us as a group, the Body of Christ known as Waters Edge.
But here comes the hard part. The world has never fully understood how to tap into this power. We don’t find it deposited in a bank somewhere. It’s not tucked away on some holy mountain in the middle of the desert. No, God’s power is revealed…God’s power is experienced…each and every time we follow Jesus’ example of sacrificial love. When we share this love with one another…and when we share this love with those outside these four walls…the power of God is released.
For centuries this truth has been called “foolishness” by those in positions of prestige and privilege. But as Paul writes to the Corinthian church,
“But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.” – I Corinthians 1:24 (NIV)
