Sermon Snap Shot December 3, 2017

But as much as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God and Everlasting Father speak to the people’s longing and to Jesus’ eventual identity and vocation, it is Isaiah’s fourth name, Prince of Peace, that has always resonated with me personally. Somehow this child prophesied by Isaiah and others would be the bearer of shalom, of peace. And by shalom we don’t mean simply an absence of hostilities but, as our liturgy noted earlier, a deep wholeness combined with fairness and justice. A place where there is not only no more war…
but where all are clothed
where all are fed
where all are housed
where all have access to a good education
where all have the ability to make a fair wage
where all have access to healthcare that won’t bankrupt them…and so on and so on.

Advent and Christmas is that time of the year when we remember: the Prince of Peace is coming. And when he does, he will bring order to the chaos that seems to rule our world, he will set things right and he will ensure that all God’s children have a place at God’s table.

From Sunday December 3 message based on Isaiah 9:1-7, “What Shall HIs Name Be?: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”
