Sermon Snap Shot December 1, 2019

The second of Jesus’ promises that I find myself turning to often these days are these words from the Gospel of Matthew:
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
Jesus looks at each us – weary, worn out souls that we are – and offers this promise: “Come. Come. I will give you rest.” I think all of us can hear this Good News, whether we’re stressed out college students preparing for exams or 75 year olds who have been giving and giving for years now – to our family, to our spouse, to our church, to our community – and we’re tired.
But then, Jesus continues with these words which sound a bit paradoxical at first glance:
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
At we talked about at length during our series on Simon Peter, taking on Jesus’ yoke – following in his footsteps – can be quite burdensome and heavy, not the least bit light. And yet, deciding to live for Jesus…deciding to live for God…deciding to live not for our needs or wants but for the needs of others…can be quite liberating.
