Sermon Snap Shot Christmas Eve 2019

What do you love deeply? What causes your heart to stir, to swell when you see it or think about it?
For some of us, it’s watching our favorite team play. I can remember as a little boy getting so amped up to watch my Clemson Tigers, and I can remember being so dejected when they lost (believe it or not they used to lose quite regularly when I was a little boy!).
For others of us, it’s our pet. Animals can be such great sources of love, can’t they? John and Carol Webster tearfully exited worship on Sunday – they had to put down their beloved dog the day before.
For still others of us, it’s our car…or our vintage gun…or our baseball card collection…or our favorite doll.
I have felt deep love for these and many other things over the years. But looking back, I really never knew how much someone could love something so deeply – with one’s entire heart, soul, mind and strength – until I had a child. When I held my Griffin for the first time…when I held my Grace…I felt a love for them that was unconditional. A love for them that was immeasurable. I felt a depth of love that I had never felt before. I still feel this love today, and I’m sure I’ll feel it until the day I die.
Yes, it wasn’t until I had my own children that I began to fully appreciate the meaning of Christmas. God choosing to come to us in the person of Jesus. Why? Because of love. This depth of love for us and for all of creation that is truly immeasurable, far beyond our comprehension.
We know we are truly blessed – we know we have truly lived – when we experience this depth of love in our own lives…on the receiving end…and hopefully the giving end as well.
