Sermon Snap Shot August 5, 2018

These laws dealing with the canceling of debts and harvesting of the land from Deuteronomy are “civil” in nature for sure, and most Christians no longer see the “letter” of these laws being applicable since the Church – this trans-national, borderless entity which Christ has opened “to people of all ages, nations and races” – was established at Pentecost. But while the letter of these laws may no longer apply, certainly most Christians believe that the spirit of these laws are still very much applicable. And, of course, the lessons that the spirit of these laws teach us along with the out-of-classroom lesson of the manna are pretty straightforward. In fact, they sound a lot like a lesson that we might learn in kindergarten:

God is the source of all good gifts.
God’s gifts given to us to enjoy and to share.
To be “God’s people” is to be generous with others in the community of faith, but also with others outside the community of faith, especially those who are the most vulnerable: the poor, the needy, the widows, the orphans and the aliens living in our midst.

From Sunday August 5 message based on Deuteronomy 15 and 24 entitled, “Lessons for Life: Share Everything.”
