Sermon Snap Shot August 28, 2016

“Oh what a tangled web that we weave,
When first we practice to deceive.” – Sir Walter Scott

This is the trap that King David fell into, and it’s the trap that Ryan Lochte fell into as well. One mistake leads to another mistake which leads to yet another. One bad choice leads to another bad choice which leads to yet another. One sin leads to another sin and before you know it most of the 10 commandments have been broken and lives have been destroyed.

And while it’s tempting to relish in the gossip when we see famous people like Lochte crash and burn before our eyes…to point fingers and say, “What a fool!”…the truth is we are all no different than Lochte. We’re all no different than David.

We’re all guilty – maybe not on the same scale – but we’re all guilty of knowing God’s good commands…commands designed to lead to life and yet breaking them anyway. And then, quite often, we’re also guilty of letting one sin lead to another and then another until, before we know it, we find ourselves in a deep mess. And then tragically, we discover that we have not only imperiled our own life and reputation but others as well, including those that we love most dearly.

From yesterday’s message based on 2 Samuel 11-12 entitled, “Reflections on Rio 2016: Oh What a Tangled Web That We Weave”
