What does this passage have to teach us?
First, we are not the Vine. We are (merely) the branches.
Second, we all need regular pruning, for God to remove the deadwood from our lives.
And third, we know we are bearing abundant fruit when we are loving one another.
Lent is a time for remembering that the Vine is the source of our life, the source of our strength.
Lent is a time for re-grafting ourselves onto the Vine.
Lent is a time for asking God, the Great Farmer, to prune us where needed so that we might bear even more fruit.
And Lent is a time for examining our hearts for those places where hatred, enmity and ill will – toward one another, our neighbor and those who are most unloveable – needs to be replaced with love.
