To be a Christian is to believe in the Resurrection of Jesus that happened on that Easter Sunday years ago. And to be a Christian is to believe in a God who remains in the business of resurrection…a God who is constantly taking death and destruction and devastation and raising up about new life in its place. And since my arrival here at Waters Edge nearly four years ago, “I have seen the Lord” over and over again myself in and through all of you.
When I first heard the story of the handful of families who stepped out in faith to start this church – folks who believed that there were others in our community who needed to know of God’s love for them – I said to myself, “I have seen the Lord!”
When I used to watch our setup crews work Sunday after Sunday to create a space of worship for us at Beaufort Academy, I used to say to myself, “I have seen the Lord!”
When I watch you welcome new folks to our community – new Marine families, folks from all over the United States who have decided they want to make a life here in Beaufort – I say to myself, “I have seen the Lord!”
When I see you take on the role of parent or grandparent for the children of our congregation – loving them, teaching them, treating them like your own – I say to myself, “I have seen the Lord!”
When I see you care for one another – during times of illness, grief, financial duress, and so on, bearing one another’s burdens in real, tangible ways – I say to myself, “I have seen the Lord!”
When I watched you explore the possibility of converting this old barn, this old boys’ home into a place of worship…and then actually do it – I said to myself, “I have seen the Lord!”
And when I see you open the doors of this space that you’ve worked so hard for, that you’ve given so generously to create, for others to enjoy – college students, homeless families, migrant children and so on – I say to myself, “I have seen the Lord!”
Waters Edge, you live as witnesses to the Resurrection every day. You live as Easter people every day. Your witness and faithfulness continue to inspire me and all whom you touch.
