Sermon Snap Shot September 3, 2017

To live this life…to live in this world…is to experience storms on occasion – seasons of turmoil in our lives – when things get turned upside down and life as we know it will never be the same again. And while it is awfully tempting to look for simple explanations for why these storms happen, the Scriptures give us a range of responses that help us make sense of it all, that give us the strength to press on.
So where is God? I believe that God is with us, Emmanuel, guiding us, comforting us, provoking us, saving us.
So where is God? I believe that God is still in control…maybe not exactly in the ways we might think or want…but nevertheless still in control over the destiny of our world and our lives.
So where is God? I believe that the same God who resurrected Jesus on Easter Sunday is doing the same thing on this Sunday morning…in Rockport, Houston, Port Arthur, Beaumont and communities in between.
So where is God? As the Beatitudes remind us, God is right now blessing those who suffer, who mourn, who hunger and thirst – all those who cry out to God.
So where is God? God is here, right now, speaking to us all through the music, the message, the fellowship and saying that same words uttered by the Psalmist: “Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in all the earth!”
So where is God? God is at this table…in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup. And God is saying, “Come. Come, all who are weary. Come, all who are heavy laden. Come, I will give you rest.”
From Sunday, September 3 message based on Psalm 46, “The Psalms: A Songbook for All Seasons – For a Season of Turmoil.”
