Sermon Snap Shot December 17, 2017

I made the comment two weeks ago that no other name ascribed to this baby has touched my heart more over the years than “Prince of Peace.” Well, as a pastor, no other name from the Christmas story has influenced my theology and practice more than this one: Emmanuel. I do believe that God has come to us in this baby, and, as the Apostle Paul notes in his letter to the church in Rome, that there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that can ever separate us from the love that God has for us in Jesus. Nothing – not even death itself.
And over the years, I’ve recalled this promise over and over again with folks who were dealing with a wide range of challenges. Dealing with sickness? Emmanuel.
Struggling in your marriage? Emmanuel.
Battling depression? Emmanuel.
Grieving the loss of your beloved? Emmanuel.
Bracing for a storm? Emmanuel.
And I’ve recalled this promise during joyous times too. Just yesterday, as I led Todd and Suzanne Wilkins through their wedding vows, I prayed this prayer:
“God, we rejoice in your life in the midst of our lives. We praise you for your presence with us, and especially in this act of solemn covenant.” Emmanuel. God-with-us.
From Sunday December 17 message based on Matthew 1:18-24, “What Shall His Name Be? Jesus/Yeshua and Emmanuel”
