Sermon Snap Shot August 27, 2017

In our tradition we have three General Rules that guide our life together. These Rules date back several hundred years and, to this day, every United Methodist minister is asked these questions when he or she is ordained:
Do you know the General Rules of our Church?
Will you keep them?
When I first learned about these Rules as a teenager, I found the first two easy to understand: (1) Do no harm and (2) Do good. But I struggled to make sense of the third rule: (3) Attend to the ordinances of God.
But as I grew older, I began to realize that this third Rule pretty much echoed what my mother used said to me regularly growing up – from the time I was a child until my early adulthood. And those words were…
“Lane, I love you. I trust you. Remember who you are.”
Yes, my mother, the mother of three “active” boys, never threatened us with restrictions or punishment. She never said, “If you don’t follow my rules…if you don’t do this or that…then you will be in trouble!” No. She would simply – yet profoundly – say…
“I love you. I trust you. Remember who you are.” Over and over and over again!
My hope is that the children born into and raised within this community of faith called Waters Edge will hear God’s voice in the same way Jeremiah did centuries ago: God made you. God loves you. God has called you. And God will never leave you.
And my hope is also that we ALL will be reminded – every week as we gather – of the words spoken so often by my mother to me: Remember who you are.
From Sunday August 27 message on Back to School Sunday based on Jeremiah 1:1-10 entitled, “Remember Who You Are”
